Microsoft has plans to let more workers continue to work from home post-pandemic.
The Redmond, Washington-based conglomerate has unveiled plans to adopt a “hybrid workplace” environment as it copes with the raging coronavirus crisis. The company says part of its strategy is to permanently offer employees greater flexibility once the outbreak subsides.
Microsoft’s executive vice president Kathleen Hogan announced the news in a blog post on Friday.
“Flexibility can mean different things to each of us, and we recognize there is no one-size-fits-all solution given the variety of roles, work requirements and business needs we have at Microsoft,” Hogan said.
“To address this, we have provided guidance to employees to make informed decisions around scenarios that could include changes to their worksite, work location, and/or work hours once offices are open without any COVID-19 restrictions.”

Most of Microsoft’s employees have worked remotely since March. But after the health crisis is over, it will be normal for most roles to remain remote less than 50% of the time with manager approval, the company says.
Employees who choose to work remotely on a permanent basis won’t have assigned office spaces but will have access to flexible “touchdown space” at Microsoft’s offices, according to The Verge.
Microsoft’s decision follows other tech companies such as Twitter and Square, which have said more of their workforce can work from home permanently.
